Use less hot water
It takes a lot of energy to heat hot water. Use less by taking a shower instead of a bath and by setting the washing machine to 30 degrees C. Only boil as much water as you need in your kettle (but remember to cover the element).
Turn down your central heating
Moving your thermostat down by1 degree C in winter could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent and save you around £40 per year. Insulating your loft to the recommended depth of 270mm will save you energy and money.
Use rechargeable batteries
It takes 80 times more energy to produce a battery than the battery itself contains. Use rechargeables instead. You can recycle used batteries by putting them in your black recyclables box.
An average house has 12 items on standby - track them down and turn them off. Take the telly off standby - 20kg of carbon saved in a single year. Stereo off standby - 66kg of carbon saved. DVD off standby - 44kg of carbon saved.
